In the 1970’s, I was called the “smoothie queen”. So I have created and seen a lot of protein shakes throughout the years! In the 70′s and 80-s we kept it simple: fresh fruit, apple juice, bee pollen, brewer’s yeast with a little plain yogurt.

In the 90′s we added protein powder, whey (not for those who have dairy sensitivity), egg white, rice, or organic soy protein. Since then, soy is not on the good list! To these protein powder shakes, we added fruit, water, almond milk or rice milk, greens powder, and some flax oil.

By the 90′s more complex protein powders came out filled with promises that were not always beneficial.

In the early 2000′s almond butter, whey protein, and chocolate was the popular shake, but it was not great for shedding pounds and created lots of congestion!

A few years later, popular demand became the Vitamix shake with green veggies, fruit, avocado, coconut water, or fresh coconut smoothies.

I do not like any ready made manufactured shakes. They may be easy to buy and great for the manufacturer’s pocket, but most are not healthy for me, nor many of my clients.

When I recommend protein powders, I usually go for something that is simple and nutrient rich without the added “energizers”.

I like vegan-based proteins and only occasionally recommend organic whey. I do like adding some kind of greens powder based on a client’s specific needs and some kind of reds powder (i.e. acai or pomegranate) with water, coconut water or organic rice milk as the liquid base. From there we can add fruit and veggies.

I never recommend adding MACA or flax oil or almond butter to protein shakes.

For some, the simple version of fruit, water or coconut water, yogurt, and some green/reds powders is enough. If the person needs help with the bowel, add ground flax seeds or chia seeds.

Protein shakes are really based on an individual’s needs. Avoid too many additives and women need to stay away from MACA, it’s better for men!

Active Brain

For those who just can’t switch off their thinking, it’s hard to relax and be in the moment to enjoy. This type of person is addicted to computers, Blackberry’s/Iphones, television, lists of have-to’s, and constant doing.

Four things help this person: an hour before bedtime, turn off your gadget or electronics, complete your list, do cardio exercise after work, and make time for romance. This type of person likes to be engaged in a romantic activity to turn the libido on. Chocolate turns them on. Calcium and magnesium relaxes them.

Exhaustion

It’s hard to relax when all you want to do is sleep, especially for mothers.

Set aside time for yourself on a daily basis to relax, receive, and replenish so you can feel beautiful. You can pamper yourself by taking a bubble bath with scented candles while listening to music rather than a quick shower. Order in a nutritious meal so you’re not cooking. Get a weekly massage. A little calming luxury time for you goes a long way to get you in a desirable mood for your partner! The exhausted type responds well to being given to. Royal jelly honey is a lift for this type of woman. Eleuthero helps to energize men. For the exhausted type, both men and women can benefit from B Vitamins. “Hot herbs” can only be used if you’re not on medications.

Hormones

Hormonal imbalance is a sure fire way to kill your libido. Although it’s best to check your hormones with your medical doctor, B-Complex vitamins, fatty acids, and seaweeds, together, can help regulate your hormones. This is true for both men and women. Maca root and l. Arginine help to stimulate men, while women benefit from something more subtle like royal jelly. It is important to not include “hormonal” types of herbs or stimulants if you are on HRT. People with hormonal imbalances, should avoid junk food and artificial drinks. Having a more nutritious diet helps the types who have hormonal imbalances.

I brought my children up, teaching them to cook and play with me in the kitchen. They grew up to be excellent chefs with knowledge of wholesome ingredients and nutrition. They learned how to create raw as well as cooked recipes. Ingredients that we discovered at the farmer’s market always inspired us for our cooking adventures. In their younger years, we went from easy recipes that involved the least amount of cutting and chopping, to adding more complex skills as they grew up. Most of these recipes involve the use of a food processor.

The recipes that I created were not only good for my kids, they were also used at their school, where I changed school snacks and treats to a policy of no sugar, dairy, chocolate, artificial colors/ dyes or wheat.
I made this change in the school’s policy during 1990-1994, way ahead of the realization that sugar and other additives can create sensitivities in children.
Nuts were removed from the recipes for those who have nut allergies.

I invite you to bring your children into the kitchen at an early age and get them involved with cooking. Check out my mini meatloaves recipe.

Pressure and stress can be amplified by one’s job, parenting, during menopause, caring for aging parents or ill family members. Women can become overloaded if experiencing all of these at once.

Some women need cardio exercise such as spinning to work out the kinks both mentally and physically, while some prefer to chill out with yoga, gyrotonics, or pilates. Your personality and life style determines what will work best for you as what works for one person, may not work for another.

One of the best ways to de-stress is meditation. My “Soul Nutrition Sessions” are guided meditations based on the individual. After 2 hours together, you will come out feeling transformed and renewed.

Mediation can be achieved in many ways. One does not need to sit, say “om”, and try to empty the mind! Relaxing and unwinding with an inspirational book will help some to de-stress. For another, it is a matter of turning off the computer and turning off the tv an hour before bed. For those who are list takers, write out all of your have-to-dos an hour before bed, and get it out of your head, followed by something that relaxes you. This could be a hot bath with Epsom salts and lavender oil, or by listening to soothing music that speaks to your heart and soul. For some, walking outside, or getting your hands in the dirt will enliven and calm your spirit. In my family, we cook and derive great pleasure in making soup or coming up with a new recipe.

If you are the type of person who is amped up 24/7 taking a supplement that relaxes you can help. Calcium and Magnesium in liquid form or liquid gelcap form can be a great sleeping aid and relaxant. For others, magnesium alone will do the trick…but beware, since a large dose of magnesium can relax the bowels!

Sally has been a keynote speaker for Professional Skaters Association and has assisted many world-class athletes, including tri-athletes. Sally’s programs are designed for being your personal best.

What not to do:

Fast food: most contain MSG and insoluble fats. MSG can erode the stomach lining, increase the appetite, strip nerve endings, and deplete the body of essential fatty acids. Insoluble fats create body fat and clog arteries.

Energy drinks: canned energy drinks can accelerate the heart rate, and most contain additives that can be harmful over time or contain too much sugar. Avoid using Korean Ginseng.

Breakfast bars, coated or with fillings: most contain too much sugar and fake food additives, preservatives, and artificial colors. Sugar will lift you for a moment and then create a crash. Food additives, preservatives, and artificial colors do not expel easily from the body and can create allergic reactions.

White flour products: I call these products “glue”. White flour products turn into simple sugar, which can create a crash and they also cause constipation.

Sugar & Corn Syrup: give an immediate rush followed by a crash.

Ketchup, Teriyaki sauce, Barbeque sauce: all contain sugar and MSG.

Sodas, candy: eventually weakens bones, and feeds unhealthy bacteria resulting in a lowered immune system. Also creates a sugar crash.

Most chips: contain insoluble fats, and if flavored, contain MSG, often labeled as “spices”.

Hot dogs and meats with nitrates: these foods contain insoluble fats, preservatives, and often contain MSG.

Peanut butter with sugar: the cheap and common brands contain sugar and insoluble fats.

I recently wrote an article for my friend, Ingrid Marcroft of Upper
Westside Yoga & Wellness. If you have not yet experienced her new
yoga center in NYC, please check it out! This version contains herbs I
like from NSP.

Spring is around the corner, but before you ditch your immune
boosters, hang on just a little longer, for spring can also usher in
allergies and reactions to mold and dampness. Keep up with Vit D,
Probiotic Eleven, C, Zinc, and other immune builders. A great immune
support from NSP is Elderberry D3fense. In addition to D, this product
also contains host of herbal ingredients: elderberry, olive leaf, royal
jelly, and white willow. Use this formula to support you prior to allergy
season. Make sure to add extra antioxidants from dark berries. Thai-
Go is a fruit sweet drink with a high ORAC value. You can also choose
capsules or powders from your local health store that contain acai, goji,
camu camu or my personal favorite, a wonderful Indian herb called
Amla (Amlaki). For those who have reactions to mold, be sure to include
Super Algae or chlorella and immune supporting mushrooms, such as
Cordyceps or Immune Stimulator in your seasonal plan. Incorporate a
juice and a bowel cleanse to mark the transition from winter to spring.
Tiao-He Cleanse packets will assist you. Even if you can only do it for 3
days, a cleanse will help to unload your body from heavier winter foods
and free you up to enjoy the fruits of spring. For programs or specific
nutrients to support your needs, contact Sally for a consultation.
